Made in Elkhorn, Wisconsin USA, this is Getzen's premier small bore trombone, from one of the premier shops. The Custom is based on the best designs from the Getzen Pro Shop, but with minimal options, otherwise identical. The 3508R features a .500"/.508" dual bore slide in lightweight nickel and a 7.75" bell in red brass. The bell is hand spun and is a 2-piece, 23 gauge design with a soldered bell rim. The red brass has a broad, warm sound with more nuance.
This one
The good: Getzen at a great price, slide action is very good, played professionally in Los Angeles, clean and tuned. Chrome is 100%.
Less so: The horn has some miles on it. The tuning bow and hand slide end crook have evidence of many dents and repairs, lacquer is worn at braces and neckpipe, the included #1 leadpipe is fixed. There was some tarnish at the bell rim and someone polished and touched up the lacquer but only barely. The upper cork barrel is misaligned and doesn't want to move, but the clearance for the slide lock is fine. It may be that way from the factory.
But still: Charles Hargett spent some time cleaning, polishing, undentenizing, so it's looking pretty good.
It Plays
Yes it plays well, it's warm and big like a King 3B, but it's fast with a more apparent attack and snappiness. Less bazooka, more nuance and light touch, more clarity and pop. The lightweight hand slide feels good. This trombone is not unsightly to hold or play, it's looking nice.
