Vintage Elkhart Conn 62H Bass Trombone

$4,950.00

Item Details

This is bass trombone made by the C.G. Conn Company in Elkhart, Indiana, circa 1970.  The model 62H was perhaps the most successful of the Conn trombones with in-slide tuning.  The one-piece bell branch instead of a tuning slide makes the tone and response of these instruments simply magical.  The instrument tuning is done instead by extending the sleeves on the hand slide near the hand brace.  The hand slide is more fragile this way but the weight is about the same.  The stacked rotors in F and D use the original side by side paddles for activation.  The D-slide and press-fit leadpipe were fabricated by Larry Minick in Los Angeles.  Leadpipe fits standard Morse taper mouthpieces.

The Conn 62H and trombones like it been popular in the LA studios for generations.  And they've been especially popular in bands and orchestra in UK.

This is the nicest 62H I have seen in several decades.  It's simply stunning to look at.  The blemishes are few:  some tarnish/acid bleed in the neckpipe area, lacquer wear at the hand braces, a small dent at the end of the hand slide, and someone engraved their ID information on the end of the hand slide crook.  Weird.  I like that this instrument has the lightest version of the hand slide with no additional cross braces - lightest setup is fastest setup.  100% chrome plating coverage with nice action.

Includes original Conn case and four mouthpieces: 3 Bach and a plastic one.
