This is a classic Conn double valve bass trombone from circa 1970. The instrument began life as a single valve Conn 60H, with second rotor parts being added later, converting it to 62H. The conversion rotor looks stock, and it's been improved with the open D slide and crossover linkage.
The distinctive features of the Conn 60H and 62H trombones are the tuning mechanism in the hand slide, single or stacked double rotors, and a unique 1-piece bell branch in red brass with matching red brass bell. The original tuning setup was Bb/F/E with two thumb triggers. Most were upgraded to Bb/F/D with separate triggers like this one.
This hand slide is the latest of the Conn styles, without the center brace at the tuning mechanism. It's fragile but lighter. The leadpipe is removable with a press-fit. The inside chrome tubes are newer replacements for the original tubes. They are fresh with 100% chrome and the stockings are barrel shaped. This reduces the abrupt change in tube outside diameter at the stockings, reducing drag in 6th-7th positions. The slide action is absolutely as good as a Conn can be, 10/10. Lacquer is well-worn with loss, tarnish and wear at braces.
The bell section is in very good condition with evidence of upgrades and some damage repaired. There is moderate scarring and small areas of lacquer loss in the bell flare. The bell branch tube looks nearly perfect for this sort of instrument. Patina of the lacquer varies at repair areas. It's pretty clean though.
This 62H was played professionally by a colleague in the LA studios for many years. The only reason this is for sale at all is he bought another 62H from Jack Redmond and likes that one a little better.
Includes Conn case which is similar to the original. This may be a 112H case.
Photos taken upon arrival. This will go to Brass Mavens for an ultrasonic cleaning, then on to you?
