Static Electricity Barry Turchen for Eight Trumpets pub. Wimbledon
Static Electricity was composed in 1976. The piece exploits the timbral characteristics of various types of trumpet mutes. Even thought the music, with its liberal use of low dynamic levels and subtle coloristic effects, eschews many of the stereotypical characteristics of trumpet music, it remains idiomatic and playable throughout.
The pitch material, while chromatic, implies a series of shifting tonal centers through the emphasis of various tones. Formally, the piece can be divided into 6 sections; a b c d e a'. Sections a and a' are timbrally homogeneous, wile sections b, c, d and e timbrally heterogeneous. These sections are also differentiate texturally.
The general non-existence of a perceptible pulse and timbral effects which are somewhat evocative of electronic sounds suggested the title; Static Electricity
