The traditional European trumpet used rotary valves and has a distinctive tone that contrasts with the American piston trumpets.  The solid brass rotors plus the short leadpipe gives a clear, hot sound.  Some rotary trumpets have auxiliary keys called "Vienna keys" that promote some stability to specific notes in the high range.
