This is a custom version of the Kuhnl and Hoyer Bart Van Lier 512 model trombone made in Markt Erlbach, Germany. This 512 bell section is finished in matte lacquer on the outside and has a distinctive balance weight. What I like most about K&H trombones is their workmanship is next level. The materials, assembly, alignment, joints, finish work, slide action, ergonomics, overall design - everything is the best. I can ship these hand slides dry and know the next player will enjoy the unboxing and first check of the slide action.
Note the attached photos (for now) show a trombone with the screw bell flare. This is not that, it's fixed bell, old style. Sometimes we don't have photos yet but these show the matte finish.
The K&H .512" bore (13 mm) hand slide is all nickel and features flawless, silent action without hassle. The slide is built comfortably wide, with the tubes being 3-5/8", 92 mm apart, center to center. This gives more comfort to players with wider jaws who still prefer a smaller bore trombone.
This BVL tuning slide features the variable weight system, with two brass rods which can be removed reversed with the included torx tool. The weight's location closer to the neckpipe helps reduce torque from the weight of the bell so the horn feels well balanced. The tuning slide has nickel inside and outside tubes for strength and projection.
The BVL 210 mm brass bell is formed with a very clean open bell rim without solder. This is a two-piece bell like Conn/King/Shires but I think K&H uses a tube for the bell stem, the way Schilke does trumpets. It gives a bit more heft and projection, and added to the balance weight, this horn makes some hearty sounds and doesn't get brittle.
The outside of this bell section is clear coated in matte lacquer while the inside of the flare and the hand slide are gloss lacquer. If you aim directly at someone (why!?) they won't notice the difference in finish. But you the player will notice the reduced glare from the lighting above and behind you. If you play on bright stages a lot, this finish may be easier to look past toward the conductor as you play the gig. Cool style, reduced eye strain. There's a lot to like.
Sold with K&H stenciled Protec MAX306CT case. Includes JK 8E mouthpiece, care kit, torx tool
