The classic sound for Tommy Dorsey and "Song of India". Used in '30's-'40's music and some stage shows. When music calls for the "Shastock" mute, use this mute. Also known as the "Solotone" mute. Every year we get calls from bass trombone players looking for a bass trombone version of this mute. Their parts asks for "bass trombone solotone mute". There isn't really such a thing, and your part was likely written for a large tenor trombone with F-attachment like a Conn 88H. It may be possible to add extra cork to this mute for bass trombone use, but we have not attempted it.
