Trumpet & Flugel Mutes

Trumpet Straight Mutes

Advice on mutes from Tom Crown

Question: How do you take care of a mute?

Answer: Not much care is needed. Try not to drop it. If you drop a mute during a concert, try to not look guilty. The conductor might think it was someone else.

Question: What is the life span of a mute?

Answer: Given normal use, not run over by a car, a mute will last indefinitely.

Question: What are the differences of tone color and response of aluminum, copper end and brass end mutes?

Answer: Different types of metal definitely affect the mute’s tone quality and response, much as different metals used in a bell affect a trumpet’s tone quality and response. It is very difficult to describe what these differences are, however. One person’s “dark” is another person’s “dead”; another person’s “bright” is someone else’s “tinny.” To me, the Tom Crown all-aluminum straight mute is bright, the brass-end mute less bright or somewhat dead, and the copper-end or the all- copper mute is dark.

Tom Crown Gemini Straight Mute

After extensive design, development and testing in the secret sordino cellars of the Tom Crown Mute Co. we are happy to introduce the new Gemini straight mute, endorsed by the trumpet section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the trumpet section of the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra, Andrea Lucchi and Omar Tomasoni of the Orchestra Santa Cecilia, Rome and Alexis Demailly of the Paris Opera Orchestra.

The Gemini is a twin to the classic Tom Crown straight mute, but slightly larger, and with differences in tone color and response. It is in our estimation the ideal orchestral metal straight mute.

Denis Wick 5504 Bb/C Aluminum

Modern aluminum , good buzzsound.

The world's favorite trumpet mute! This is perhaps the most successful, and most copied trumpet mute ever. Since it was first designed in 1968 it has given trumpet players exactly what they need: a mute which is perfectly in tune in all registers, a great feel which doesn't effect the 'blow' of the instrument, and the ability to produce a searing fortissimo in orchestral tuttis.

The  reason for the success of this Denis Wick mute lies partly in the brilliance of the design and partly in the care and precision of the manufacture. The design has created a very open mute, bigger than all its predecessors, giving a full sound and avoiding the problem of sharpness of pitch encountered in many trumpet mutes.

The hand-spun aluminium is both light and extremely resonant. Other manufacturing techniques produce mutes which are not as hard. Our hand-crafting produce a mute where the metal is 'work-hardened' making it both light and very resonant. This makes it free-blowing and extremely responsive and the choice of the most demanding musicians.

Real cork is used to produce a snug fit in the bell of the instrument. We are proud that this mute is used by thousands of musicians all over the world and yet also represents incredible value. This is one of the most important pieces of equipment a trumpet-player will ever purchase, but is available at an incredibly reasonable price

Denis Wick 5520 D Trumpet/Eb Cornet Aluminum

Smaller version for more obscure trumpet sizes.

Made from high purity spun aluminium, 'scotchbrite' finished and bright silver anodised. Offer brilliance and carrying power which make them the choice of the world's finest professionals. Excellent intonation.

The DW5521 piccolo trumpet mute fits the Bb and A bells, and the DW5520 D-trumpet mute fits the G bell very nicely. I am highly pleased with both mutes!

I hope my information will be helpful, in case you ever receive questions from other individuals regarding the proper mute for a G-trumpet.  Of course, there's a possibility that the D-trumpet mute may not fit all makes and models of G-trumpets, but it certainly fits the Kanstul 1520, if not others.  (By the way, my G-bell is a 4.5-inch bell (about 11-12cm) - I don't know if that is a common size for a G-bell or not.)
Thanks for your helpful information and your excellent craftsmanship!

Denis Wick 5551 Bb/C Wood

Very artful wooden straight mute, smoother, softer, more mellow sound .

The Denis Wick range of wooden mutes is designed to provide modern brass players with a mute which sounds great, even at the quietest of dynamics. This mute will carry on working even at the end of an extreme diminuendo - it will allow the tone to drop almost nothing. Denis Wick has achieved this by a unique construction method which uses beautiful wood, with all its natural attributes of strength and resonance, and a very hard inner lining, made of a hi-tech modern material, which gives rigidity and enhances the acoustic properties of the mute.

The use of wooden mutes is popular in European orchestras and helps create that distinctive muted sound which is so useful in nineteenth-century orchestral music. They are especially useful when used in opera, where often a very soft pianissimo is required. Denis Wick wooden mutes can be found in many leading opera houses around the world, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and the Teatro alla Scala, Milan.

The Denis Wick wooden French horn mute is the choice of mute for many professional horn players around the world. With its perfect intonation, beautiful tone and instant response it is the leading mute of its kind. It has adjustable tuning which allows the mute to be adapted to suit every kind of French horn.

The mutes are very light and resonant, and are also very rigid. They are all individually hand-crafted. The bases are made from a solid piece of marine ply and the wooden ‘cone’ from Finnish birch wood. The inner lining is applied by a special method which ensures maximum strength and resonance.

Denis Wick wooden mutes are used widely in bands and in orchestras: their excellent intonation and all-round performance makes them a great choice for any brass player. They are made in different sizes for most brass instruments, including all brass band and orchestral brass instruments, from Eb trumpet/soprano cornet down to BBb tuba.

Modern louder aluminum cup sound, adjustable, very nicely made, for Bb/C trumpet

Denis Wick cup mutes have the perfect intonation that has become the hallmark for all Denis Wick mutes, with the added bonus that the cup position can be adjusted to give exactly the desired sound quality - for microphone, solo or section playing.

Essential for any quality trumpeter!

Very good quality, nice sound, simply the best mute I can find, and at a fairly reasonable price.
The silver part (cup) detaches, and leaves a straight mute, or when attached, a cup mute. This is good - two for one.
The cork parts are good, and do not leave marks, or anything like that, overall it is a very nice bit of kit, essential for any quality trumpeter!  (I play Yamaha 4335G)

The standard by which others are measured…

Save for the high end such as the Marcus Bona mutes, this cup mute nowadays is probably the professional standard by which all other cup mutes are measured. I first bought it on recommendation of multiple teachers, including one who plays in a major US orchestra, and I've played this mute for around 6 years. I have to say that I still absolutely love it. Some would say that it might be a little brighter and more metallic than the old school red and white 'stonewall; mutes, but to me those mutes seem dead and this one responds beautifully and has character. Further, an excellent feature that you can experiment with is the fact that the Wick is adjustable which means that you can take the cup part and adjust the distance it is from the bell, which modifies the sound. Thus you can mess with the distance to experiment with the type of sound you want. Fit and finish is outstanding, has lasted through heavy use through this long no problem. Excellent mute!

Soulo

This is a new lightweight bucket mute that's made in the style of the classic Finch mute from decades ago.  It's made in the US, offers several positions for a more open or closed tone, and is very light (62g).  It attaches to the bell without scratching, is even in all registers, and has no resistance.  It's also been adopted and endorsed by many professional players in Los Angels and around the world.  It's similar in design to the Eazy Bucket mute we've sold for several years (Eazy Bucket RIP), but is improved in acoustics and durability.

KEY FEATURES:

  • Perfect pitch in all registers
  • No back-pressure
  • 2 Adjustable positions for different color sounds
  • Adjustable clips allow quick on and off
  • Extremely lightweight, lighter than all other buckets
  • Ships with cotton bag, which can be used as additional stuffing

The new bucket mute for trumpet, tenor & bass trombone. Unlike any other mute, Soulo Mute is perfectly in tune in all registers, has no back-pressure, and no 'squirrelly' notes. The coated brass clips are flexible to accommodate all bell sizes and allow for quick on and off. It is considerably lighter than every other brand. Soulo Mute offers two adjustable positions, which allow for different color sounds. It now comes with a 100% organic cotton bag to protect it from wear and tear and provide a third sound color option - a darker bucket mute sound, with the bag stuffed inside. All these options allow the trumpet player to blend perfectly in a section comprised of different brands of bucket mutes. The mute is perfect for performance and sound recordings, as it will never fall off the bell. Endorsed by US and international trumpet icons like Wayne Bergeron, Chuck Findley, Roger Ingram, Jens Lindemann, Herb Alpert, Andrea Giuffredi and many more. Made in the USA by trumpet player Mike Jarosz.
